Overview
Ulthera is a non-invasive, US FDA-cleared high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) treatment that tightens and lifts the skin, delivering healthy and youthful-looking skin without the need for surgery. Learn more about Ulthera treatment here at Patricia Yuen Dermatology.
What is Ultherapy?
Ultherapy is an effective treatment for nonsurgical skin-lifting. Using micro-focused ultrasound technology to trigger the natural production of collagen in the skin, it promises to lift, tone, and tighten loose skin on the brows, neck, under the chin, and even the decolletage.
Performed over 1.5 million times, Ultherapy also counts minimal to no downtime and a fast recovery amongst its many benefits, with most patients noticing visible results in just one session. It is suitable, especially for people who are seeking non-surgical ways of lifting and firming their skin.
What Are the Benefits of Ultherapy?
Non-surgical, Non-invasive Treatment
Ultherapy avoids the need for incisions or downtime associated with invasive surgeries.
Minimal to No Downtime
Completed within 60-90 minutes, this non-invasive approach allows individuals to resume their daily activities immediately post-treatment.
US FDA-approved Ultrasound Technology
Ulthera treatment adheres to strict standards, ensuring patients receive a treatment backed by rigorous testing and proven results.
Natural, Gradual Results Over 2-3 Months
By stimulating the body's collagen production, this process initiates a subtle yet continuous skin tightening, achieving natural-looking results.
Usually, Just One Treatment
In many cases, Ultherapy allows patients to achieve their desired outcomes in one session.
Visible Results Lasting 12 to 18 Months
The ultrasound technology prompts natural collagen production, resulting in lifting and tightening effects that last for over a year before a maintenance treatment is recommended.
* Results may vary among individual patients.

How Does Ultherapy Work?
Real-time Visualisation Technology
Ultherapy’s real-time imaging technology allows dermatologists to see precisely which layers of skin tissue they are treating. They will be able to avoid blood vessels and bony areas and reduce any discomfort for the patient.
Collagen Regeneration
With its micro-focused ultrasound energy, Ultherapy is able to bypass the surface of the skin to deliver energy to a specific depth, at a specific temperature. This is a vast improvement from technology like lasers, radio frequency or traditional surgical techniques. Under the skin, Ultherapy’s ultrasound energy triggers a natural response from the body and kick-starts collagen regeneration.
Treatment of Specific Layers
Ultherapy also boasts the capability of non-invasively reaching 3 specific depths under the skin – 1.5mm, 3mm and 4.5mm. In this way, our doctor is able to treat wrinkles and fine lines at the dermis layer and target the deeper foundation layers to kick-start the collagen regenerative process.
Customisability
Everyone’s skin is different, with differences in the thickness of skin and fat layers. Ultherapy is fully customisable according to each individual’s skin condition, to trigger collagen production in the necessary areas and achieve the most desired results.
What Are the Treatment Areas for Ultherapy?
Utilising focused ultrasound to stimulate collagen production, Ultherapy targets areas including:
- • Forehead
- • Around the eyes
- • Cheeks
- • Jawline
- • Chin
- • Neck
- • Décolletage
This leads to a gradual lift and tightening, addressing concerns like sagging brows and reducing neck and cheek laxity.
What to Expect Before, During, and After Ultherapy Treatment
Consultation
In the first consultation, a dermatologist evaluates the patient's skin and discusses aesthetic goals. This step is key in determining if Ultherapy is appropriate for their skin type and concerns. A personalised treatment plan is then developed.
Ultherapy Treatment
The procedure begins with cleansing the treatment area and applying ultrasound gel. The dermatologist uses the Ultherapy device to deliver focused ultrasound energy into targeted depths of the skin. Patients may feel tingling sensations or mild, but tolerable discomfort during the treatment, indicating the energy is reaching the desired layers to stimulate collagen production.
Post-Ultherapy Treatment
After treatment, most patients experience temporary redness, mild swelling, or tingling, which usually subside within a few hours. Hence, patients can resume their normal activities after the procedure. Over time, you will notice gradual improvements as the natural collagen-building process enhances skin tightness. Thereafter, annual follow-up Ultherapy treatments will help to maintain results.

FAQs on Ultherapy
After Ultherapy, avoid intense sun and heat exposure as they can worsen swelling and redness. Additionally, refrain from harsh skincare and other facial treatments for a few months after treatment. For personalised instructions, it is best to consult your dermatologist.
Most individuals only need one session. However, this depends on the severity of skin laxity and how the body responds to Ultherapy. During the first consultation, your dermatologist will assess your skin and recommend the optimal number of sessions for your needs and goals.
Ultherapy is suitable for individuals with mild to moderate skin laxity, especially in the neck and chin areas or those with lines and wrinkles on the chest. While typically sought by those in their 30s or older, it is also suitable for younger individuals aiming to proactively address ageing.
Ultherapy is a non-invasive procedure that produces gradual and noticeable – but not dramatic – results. Maintenance sessions are also recommended every year or so.
A facelift, on the other hand, is able to deliver more dramatic results and tackle more severe sagging and excess skin. However, as it is a surgical procedure, the recovery period is longer and the risks are higher.
Both options have their pros and cons and will depend on the individual’s needs and preferences.
